John Conway's Game of Life

The Game of Life, also known simply as Life, is a cellular automaton devised by the British mathematician John Horton Conway.

The "game" is a zero-player game, meaning that its evolution is determined by its initial state, requiring no further input. One interacts with the Game of Life by creating an initial configuration and observing how it evolves, or, for advanced "players", by creating patterns with particular properties.

Rules

The universe of the Game of Life is an infinite two-dimensional orthogonal grid of square cells, each of which is in one of two possible states, alive or dead, or "populated" or "unpopulated". Every cell interacts with its eight neighbours, which are the cells that are horizontally, vertically, or diagonally adjacent. At each step in time, the following transitions occur:

  • Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, as if caused by underpopulation.
  • Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives on to the next generation.
  • Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as if by overpopulation.
  • Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell, as if by reproduction.

The initial pattern constitutes the seed of the system. The first generation is created by applying the above rules simultaneously to every cell in the seed—births and deaths occur simultaneously, and the discrete moment at which this happens is sometimes called a tick (in other words, each generation is a pure function of the preceding one). The rules continue to be applied repeatedly to create further generations.

There is no correlation between intelligence and trading

Many people assume that those who regularly make money in stock markets must be very clever. Or that you must be blessed with some intelligence to "make it big" in the markets.

This is a very wrong assumption as there is no correlation between intelligence and trading.

If clever or intelligent people were good traders, then all your classmates from school or college who were toppers or other clever people (like doctors, engineers etc) you meet in life would be excellent traders. That is certainly not the case.

On the other hand, a lot of ordinary people  have earned excellent returns by simply buying a stock and not doing anything for years or decades (Warren Buffet). While people with far shorter timeframes and wanting to "do something everyday" have lost a lot several times over.

If you’re so smart, why aren’t you rich? Turns out it’s just randomness

The distribution of wealth follows a well-known pattern sometimes called an 80:20 rule: 80 percent of the wealth is owned by 20 percent of the people. Indeed, a report last year concluded that just eight men had a total wealth equivalent to that of the world’s poorest 3.8 billion people.

....

while wealth distribution follows a power law, the distribution of human skills generally follows a normal distribution that is symmetric about an average value. For example, intelligence, as measured by IQ tests, follows this pattern. Average IQ is 100, but nobody has an IQ of 1,000 or 10,000.

The same is true of effort, as measured by hours worked. Some people work more hours than average and some work less, but nobody works a billion times more hours than anybody else.

...

The wealthiest individuals are typically not the most talented or anywhere near it. “The maximum success never coincides with the maximum talent, and vice-versa,” say the researchers.

So if not talent, what other factor causes this skewed wealth distribution? “Our simulation clearly shows that such a factor is just pure luck,” say Pluchino and co.

The team shows this by ranking individuals according to the number of lucky and unlucky events they experience throughout their 40-year careers. “It is evident that the most successful individuals are also the luckiest ones,” they say. “And the less successful individuals are also the unluckiest ones.”

That has significant implications for society. What is the most effective strategy for exploiting the role luck plays in success?

Elliott Wave Outlook and Trading Srategy for 01 March 2018

Nifty opened lower at 10488, registered low 10461 and traded with positive bias for rest of the day with range bound volatility. Nifty traded in 10535-10461 range for whole day and closed 61 points down at 10492.

Yesterday, the overall wave counts were suggesting one more decline for low below 10276, most probably from 10637-10829 range. For short term, bounce towards 10662-10740 was expected with 10562-10520 as short term support and 10520 as breakeven point and stoploss for longs.

Trading strategy was to hold existing longs with stoploss of 10509 but Nifty opened lower below stoploss and stoploss was triggered. Now, let’s have a fresh look at latest charts for further scenario.

The key to happiness is detachment or non attachment

Image result for happinessThe basic cause of suffering isn’t that bad things happen. Bad things will always happen. People will always fall out of love, or leave — in one way or another.

Our pain and hurt comes not from change, but from our attachment.

We expect things to be a certain way, and we’re crushed when it doesn’t happen.

When reality doesn’t match up to the image, friction happens and pain occurs.

The solution isn’t to cling more desperately to someone — or the idea of them and your relationship. Your salvation isn’t in coupling up with “the one” who promises to never leave you.

The solution is to accept that everything in life changes.

Non-attachment is happiness

It’s setting up reasonable expectations.

When you live without attachment, you live with honesty. You allow things to flow their natural course, accept that which you cannot control — which is everything outside your own mindset — and instead curate your wellbeing through your state of mind (one of lightness.)
