This day trader lost Rs 24 lakh in 5 minutes

Imagine investing about Rs 11,250 in the stock market and getting a return of Rs 6.08 lakh in a span of five minutes.

But when the broker sends you the contract note, the securities transaction tax (STT) for the trade is over Rs 24 lakh -- almost four times the profit -- and it's not a printing mistake.

It happened with 27-year-old management student Chirag Gupta.

When about five minutes were left for the markets to close, Gupta saw that he could buy Nifty call options at 5 paise per unit and make a profit of around Rs 2.75 a unit.

He bought options that Nifty will close above 8,600 and it closed at 8,602.75.

Gupta bought all the Nifty lots (3,000) he could in the short span of time.

One Nifty lot has 75 units.

Later, he realised that his broker had deducted over Rs 24 lakh from his trading account for STT.

Gupta's mistake: He let the option expire.

The calculation of STT is different if a trader squares off the position before expiry and if he lets the contract expire.

How to manipulate a F&O stock

Some traders say it is possible for a cartel of brokers to get together and take up huge positions through circular trading in a way that the marketwide limit in a security is breached.
That makes it impossible for new traders to sell the futures even if they feel the rise in a company’s stock price is unjustified.
This helps keep the stock price firm.
Also, traders with existing short positions in the derivatives segment will be forced to cover their positions at a higher price, pushing the stock price even higher.-from Money Control

Your finger print is the worst password you can ever have

CITER fingerprint moldA password is something which only you should know. While using a debit card or credit card, you enter the password yourself and do not advertise this to the world.

Viewed from this perspective, using a finger print as a login/ authentication tool can be the worst way to login.

The reason is simple... as long as you keep touching anything anywhere you are leaving your finger prints. Copying this finger print calls for low level skills.

Neowave outlook for market

...Even by conventional Technical Analysis, gap-up action creates technical support for the Future market action. Indeed, lending importance to the huge gap-up area, we had shifted the starting point of “g” from 9th March to 27th March. At last week’s low, Sensex was less than 100 pts away the gap-up area.

Typical of Triangle, the b-leg looks “slower”, i.e. it has consumed 6 days to retrace 67% of 6-day long a-leg so far. It could retrace more of a-leg, but should not ideally break the starting point of the a-leg.

For the fresh week, accordingly, we may watch if the b-leg holds the gap-up area of 14th March or not. If it does hold the said gap-up area, then we could expect an upward c-leg of the Ending Triangle.

Due to what we suspect Triangle with “contracting” legs inside “g”, trading environment could turn narrower, choppy & tricky until it breaks out from the triangular situation.

We may have to look for Diametric possibility for “g” if b-leg turns bigger than a-leg. Completion of “g” would be indicated by faster retracement of its last leg. This is yet to happen.

In the meanwhile, Sensex has gone nowhere after having entered our “Bubble Territory” shown on the following chart of Nifty PE Ratio.

Will India witness a shortage of quality investable companies in the future?

India is likely to witness shortage of quality investable companies in the future.
The seeds were sown few years back with the scrapping of press note, allowance of 100% FDI in most of the sectors, buy back by listed MNCs and regulatory arbitrage available to do buy back rather than paying dividend.
Moreover, in many cases Initial Public Offers are from companies that have been, private equity funded leaving less room for upside for secondary market players.
All these factors are compounding the valuation for high quality companies to stratospheric height, leaving less room for error, if forecasted earnings are not met.
Moreover, my observation is that in many areas, MNC with technological edge, global relationship, brand, superior business processes have an edge, emerging as leaders or have gained dominant markets share in respective field.
Many such, not represented in the listed equity universe of India.
The classic example is the compressor industry, where the world technological leader is not listed anymore.
This sets us in dilemma of how to invest in an excellent business, which is not listed, or invest in a second rung, average business as proxy play.
Therefore, relative value trade, pitting one company against another without a deep dig, is not going to yield sustainable return.
Such scenario also reinforces, hold on to the good companies you have discovered rather attempting to find new gem.

How failure of stock brokers/banks in 1860s led to formation of Bombay Stock Exchange..(and history repeated with NSE 120 years later)

Image result for bombay stock exchange old pictures... By the decade of 1840-50, six such brokers were recognised by banks and merchants. These brokers also dealt in bullion along with stocks. The number was small but still good enough to serve limited needs at that time.

Chief amidst these brokers was Seth Premchand Roychand. He entered the list of brokers in 1849 but soom rose to become the most prominent name. He was known by various names such as Cotton king, Napoleon of Finance and so on, They conducted business under a banyan tree in Horniman Circle which still stands today ( I think have gone by that tree a couple of times without being aware of its history).

By 1855, brokers increased to 40. Now, there were multiple such trading posts under banyan trees located around Fort area.

The number of brokers jumped to more than 200 following American Civil War (1861-65). The civil war led to rise in demand for Indian cotton which made Bombay such a frenzied place. Along with rising demand for cotton, demand for raising money via equities also rose leading to rise in share trading. These brokers became a widely respected community well known to bankers and police alike.
